EXTERMINATE-EXTERMINATE-EXTERMINATE--

I was going to talk about the Naruto chapter, but then I found something even better to discuss! You remember when I posted an entry concerning the airing of the Shippuden dub on the Disney XD channel? Apparently, it aired yesterday. And, well...

Apparently, the Disney broadcast replaced every instance of the word "kill" in the uncut dub with the word "destroy."

What I want to know is, what, exactly, is less violent about the word destroy? If anything, "destroy" implies more violence--you won't just be dead, you'll be in pieces. Maybe it's because the word "destroy" is usually applied to inanimate objects? Or that the violence of the word is more implicit, and therefore dependent on your reading into it, rather than the explicit violence of the word "kill?" THOUGHTS, FLIST?

Yes, I am a language/word dork. Deal.

Also, this wasn't mentioned in the relevant post on chuunin, but a friend who'd seen it told me that Sasuke drawing his sword was glossed over/edited out. Really? Really?

I mean, I just....why would you pick up the distribution rights at all if the show is too violent for your target audience??? I have to admit, I was enough of a sucker that I thought Disney would air the show later than prime-time so as to not have to make many cuts. HAHA, I'M HILARIOUS.

...Poor Yuri Lowenthal. That's all I have to say. His dialogue is going to be massacred. Not to mention the Akatsuki! Alas poor villains, we knew them... (Oh, geez, I wonder if they're going to massively clusterfrack Pain's dialogue for religious references? Depends, I guess. Though if they get that far with the airing, I'm pretty sure we'll have other things to worry about.)

Completely unrelatedly, I found out from TV Tropes that Anthony Burgess wrote A Clockwork Orange while trying to deal with his wife's violent rape. That just makes the book that much sadder and more harrowing for me. And I found the book very hard to read when I read it (beginning of senior year, purely of my own volition).

...

I could never understand why "destroy" makes it a step up from "kill". I mean, the Twin Towers weren't killed, they were destroyed.

Also, your HTML is acting kinda wonky.

Me neither! It's kind of dumb. Besides, why not leave in the word "kill?" It's not like Naruto makes light of people dying--quite the contrary. PEOPLE DIE. THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES. Especially in Shippuden, when they start examining the morality of a world whose main civilizations run on war and sanctioned violence. :/

Thanks for telling me, btw. Fixed~

.... Pain's dialogue is going to get fucked.

"WE ARE PAIN. WE ARE A PURELY SECULAR ENTITY!!!"

Or maybe something wussy like "WE ARE PAIN. WE ARE THE GREATEST COSMIC ENTITY IN THE KNOWN UNIVERSE." Or, you know. Something like that.

Sasuke: Our bee's will blot out the sun!
Naruto: Then we will hug in the shade!
