Okay, so at least Star Driver has some dignity as an anime. Yeah, sure, it's a Magical Girl anime disguised as a mecha anime where the mechas are run by the users' sex drives and the main character saves his rival from predatory lolis with the power of his intense gayness, but you can actually read shit into it and stuff. There is at least the pretense of some sort of faint dignity buried underneath the sparkles and rainbows.

Which, of course, apparently Cannot Happen to me.

Which appears to be why I have suddenly become a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh GX.


Not the original series, mind (not that I'm not a casual fan anyway). That would be too dignified. I mean GX.


It all began when I was farting around on the Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged page, and I somehow ended up on the GX page. There was a video linked that supposedly showed how meta the dub became in parts, prompting the in-fandom meme that LK wrote the dub secretly.

See, Yugioh GX is the one where I think I actually could stand the dub more, because at least the dub acknowledges how terrible the series is.

Though I will forgive GX much because it gave us the awesome manga version, where Judai actually has a backstory that makes you just want to hug the little guy for being so gosh darn adorable.

I simultaneously hate and love the dub - the voices are occasionally cringe-worthy, but the self-referential-bordering-on-parodic dialogue is what makes it hilarious.

I heard that there's a manga version that is AU to the forerunning anime canon, which actually has a plot that makes a substantial amount more of sense. I'll probably check it out after I watch the anime, or at least as much of the anime as I can.

Self referential bordering on parody dialog can make a lot of things better, especially a mess like GX which is already plenty absurd to begin with.

Not only does it do all that, it treats the secondary characters with respect, and actually has more than two female characters *le gasp* And no, they are not just exceedingly girly men. Also, Jaden's a lot less obnoxious and lot more adorable. He even helps Bastion get a girl's phone number.

It was very slick how he did it to.

Also, the line "You cannot survive in the dueling world, you're too kind to become a duelist, and one day that kindness will come to grieve you," is said by an older brother to his younger brother, and it's very powerful and dramatic until you remember they're talking about a Children's Card Game.
