SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS I LOVE THIS SHOW

Okay, so I am in love with our new twins. Mizuno and Marino are THE CUTEST THINGS TO EVER CUTE IN THE HISTORY OF CUTE, each for different reasons. Also, Marino being the sexy and confident (but only to mask her insecurities and secret!) leader of her section is A+. Also, I love that the guys in her section are these three derp idiots who hang around in their man-cave and think they're hot shit while they play darts in their absurd harlequin uniforms. SERIOUSLY, WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?

I am convinced the guy with the goatee is Takuto's dad. Or is otherwise connected to him. The glance he gave the painting in the last episode, and then when he moved it so the MENFOLK wouldn't hit it with their darts - I am positive this is meaningful. MEANINGFUL AS WELL - THE BLACK-HAIRED MEGANE SCIENTIST GIRL USED TO BE THE THIRD MEMBER OF SUGATA AND WAKO'S POWER TRIO???? SCANDAL!

I love that Mizuno has replaced Sakana-chan (idek if that's her real name but whatever) on the bus in the ending sequence, too.

ALSO THE FACT THAT THIS EPISODE CONSISTED MOSTLY OF AN ACTUALLY ACCURATELY-DEPICTED BASEBALL GAME FILLED ME WITH EXTREME HAPPINESS AND DELIGHT.

A theme I have spotted: isolation and the island itself. In the twins' backstory, we see that their father (stepfather? it was a bit unclear) packed up and left the island, and their mom went running after him and left them there (because Mizuno can't leave, being the West Maiden). A few episodes ago, we just found out that Sugata's primary source of negative feelings stemmed towards his perceived inability to leave the island. Wako, of course, feels this even more acutely, being the first to tell us so. Takuto's new motivation is to destroy all the Cybodies so that Wako can leave the island and pursue her dream of becoming a singer. All of this together paints the island, which seemed to the viewer (and Takuto, initially) as your stereotypical Magic Island full of magic and mechas and secrets, in a much more sobering light. I almost feel as though it's deconstructing the idea of the excitement of the Magic Island. Imprisonment and isolation appear to be, if not themes, at least recurring ideas that just keep coming up in this series.

I just love that it manages to balance that kind of subtlety with the INSANE GAY RAINBOWS AND EXPLOSIONS AND ABSURDITY of its surface content. Star Driver, I love you. ♥forever

HOW HAVE YOU MISSED MY THIRTY THOUSAND RANTS ON THIS SHOW? D8

Star Driver is a mecha show wrapped around a magical girl show wrapped around a subverted love triangle wrapped around a study of the dichotomy of the isolation and "coming together" of adolescence wrapped around a chewy rainbow center of pure crack.

It's about this kid Takuto who comes to this island to go to this neat prep school for reasons that are still unclear (but will probably be revealed at a somewhat climactic moment), and it turns out that there are these magical mechas on this island that can only operate in this alternate dimension called "Zero Time." This organization (which seems to consist of half the kids in the school and the adults on the island) called "Kiraboshi" or "The Glittering Crux" wants to find a way to make these mecha operable in the real world, and to do this, they have to find and break or tamper with the four "Seals" on the island, which are protected by four Shrine Maidens, who cannot leave the island because then their seals will break. And then it turns out that Takuto is the "Galactic Pretty Boy" (I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP), some sort of Cybody (the mechas) prodigy who has... idk, extra awesomeness, and operates his mecha with ballet and sparkles and fabulousness.

AND HE HAS A TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCE.

I couldn't find a pure vid of his actual transformation sequence, but this is unaltered video with the PSG music behind it. Yes. It's that sparkly and explodey.
