Outrage in Washington over Obama's Japan bow
Are you kidding me? Are you FUCKING kidding me? The conservatives are wailing and whining and screeching because our president made a respectful gesture to the leader of a foreign country (one with whom, I might add, we are actually on good terms, ohoho), instead of forcing our customs on? (i.e. a handshake, fistbump, man-hug, WTF-EVER)
I mean, do these people even know what the fuck they are talking about?? Really? In Japan, a bow is the traditional greeting of every Joe Schmoe (I'm sorry, Schmoe Taro) on the street. Yes, it is a sign of humility, but it's also a sign of respect, deference, or even gratitude. Why are these shitheads all worked up?
Here, here's one of my favorites:
"I don't know why President Obama thought that was appropriate. Maybe he thought it would play well in Japan. But it's not appropriate for an American president to bow to a foreign one," said conservative pundit William Kristol speaking on the Fox News Sunday program, adding that the gesture bespoke a United States that has become weak and overly-deferential under Obama.
FUCKING CRY MOAR, YOU ASS-SUCKING PIECE OF SHIT, AND GROW A PAIR WHILE YOU'RE AT IT.
I don't, I can't even, I can't even address how fucking sad this is.

For all that pundits are idiots, it really is a very nicely executed bow, for an American. Maybe a little low for two world leaders, but since it's the emperor, erring on the side of too low is probably the better idea. /just sayin'

Date: 2009-11-17 12:18 am (UTC)Are they really thinking this one thing will make America look weak. I hate to break it to them, but Japan is going to be one of the last countries to get upset at the US. They don't have a military and are not allowed to have one. America is their military.
Well, I'm sure FOX very well does and just wants to get mad at Obama. But then, they are the soulless drones who wanted to sue Seasame Street a few days ago too.

I know it's partially because the conservatives also wanted Obama to another foreign head, but either Obama did and they just didn't think it was respectful enough or something, or he didn't. I'm leaning toward the former, Obama doesn't seem the type to try and impose our equivalent on other cultures who might take it as offensive; but, than again, you never know.

Since Obama's the visiting dignitary, it would be right for him to bow lower. Besides, no one mentioned how he shook hands with the prime minister (i.e. the actual political power, instead of the cultural figurehead).

Date: 2009-11-17 11:00 pm (UTC)Well, yeah. And, technically, he's mixing the bow with the Western handshake there, which is 'wrong' but from him kind of comes across as adorable and... an awkwardness that results from trying hard to get it right (which I think is far preferable to...just not caring that you're getting it wrong).
