Urgg, I hate when I stay up too late one night, feel fine the next day, then get eight hours of sleep that night and spend the next day feeling tired and sluggish. Especially when I had plenty of opportunity to nap during the previous day, but have no such opportunities on the day that I actually get tired. >_< and I know it's my body catching up on REM, so no one has to explain it to me, I'm just commenting that I hate it.
I joined the Anime Club here! (in addition to 247 other organizations on campus that I willprobably not be able to attend all the time) Our first meeting is Friday. I'm really excited.
Speaking of, THE NARUTO CHAPTER CAME OUT EARLY THIS WEEK, HAPPY TIME~
I love the big cheesy captions that Jump superimposes on the first and last pages of the manga chapters. This week's was "WHAT WILL BECOME OF SASUKE...AND HIS HATRED??" I just keep imagining Sasuke with some sort of pet on a leash that he carries around with him, except instead of an adorable puppy or charred rabbit corpse (Obscure YouTube reference: success.), it's some sort of PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF HAAATREEEEEED. Who's my hatred? You are! Cootchy-coo! XDDDDDD
The conversation between Gaara and Sasuke was aces. I really feel like we get to see not only how healthy Gaara has become, emotionally, but by placing them side by side, we see how far Sasuke has fallen. I also found the Chuunin Exams flashback to be very interesting in retrospect--how many of us, during that point in the Chuunin Exams, could have predicated that Gaara would be redeemed and Sasuke wouldn't? It's interesting and a little jarring when you think about it. (Also, now that Gaara is no longer serving as a foil for Naruto, he's become a foil for Sasuke. I love how that seems to be his real major contribution to the plot: being a foil for a main character.)
Sasuke was comparatively less pretty in this chapter (what? I'm capable of admitting it!), but see, that's important, because instead we got quite a few nice shots of him looking kind of pathetic, bleeding all over his face, looking battered, broken, and a little crazy, like now his outward appearance is starting to reflect his emotional/mental turmoil. I also loved Karin's concern when he busted out Susano'o, like she's really upset that he's changing so much. Juugo and Suigetsu, too, Juugo in particular - don't forget, Juugo's sole purpose in joining Hawk was to "see what kind of ninja [Sasuke was]." Not only that, he's just recovering from Sasuke giving him the green light on going batshit on everyone (which Juugo doesn't like/want to do), to see Sasuke...well, to see Sasuke going batshit on everyone. I hope this means we're going to get to see a poignant Team Hawk moral crisis. I've been waiting for it.Tristan: "It's never gonna happen, is it?"
I find it really funny that when I was at the point in the series that Sasuke was recruiting his new team, I spent most of that period thinking about Part 1, and wailing, "Remember how cute Sasuke was in Part 1? Remember that? When he had bonds and morals and stuff? I MISS THAT, LET'S GO BACK TO IT~" Now, I look back on the recruitment period in Part 2 and wail, "Remember Sasuke in mid-Part 2? When he had all those hidden motives and secretly cared about his team even though he never admitted it? And that time with the Great Naruto Bridge, and that time he fell asleep in front of everyone after the Deidara fight like a total secret dork? Remember that? I MISS IT, LET'S GO BACK TO IT." It's like this ~sliding scale of nostalgia~, where Sasuke getting worse with every chapter means that the previos chapters gradually begin to look better and better XDDDDDDDDand yet, I still love him. :|
I found this line moving: "I've shut my eyes to the light." It really follows with the general Uchiha (mostly used for Sasuke in particular) "eyes" theme/motif, as well as gives us a crucial insight into his mental state. Sasuke knows that there is a light for him to shut his eyes to. He didn't say "I can't see a light," but "I've shut my eyes to the light," meaning he has willingly and intentionally blinded himself to salvation. So we know that IF (and this is a crucial "if") Naruto is going to save Sasuke by the end of the series, it's not just going to be a case of ~showing Sasuke that people still care about him~ and, well, you saw the Pain arc. No. It wasn't like it was with Nagato, who deep down wanted to be saved, which Madara helpfully reiterated for us last chapter. (please, don't wank at me about this point, I know the Pain arc sucked, I know it was written terribly, but it's canon now and we have to deal with it.) If Naruto is going to save Sasuke by the end, he's going to have to convince him to open his eyes. Naruto has to make Sasuke want to be saved.
I don't know if that's possible, right now.
Sasuke doesn't think he deserves to be saved. He says as much to Gaara: "There's nothing for me to go back to," he says. And he might be right! He couldn't just waltz back into Konoha at this point--he's a wanted criminal, after all. I loved the half-smile he wears as he says that--it might just be him being slightly unhinged, but I read it as self-deprecating: knowing he's a hypocrite, knowing that the hole he's digging might be his grave. I just love it.
As a final note, something not about Sasuke: Who noticed Kankorou's puppet? Who thinks we might have seen it before? >D? *wiggles eyebrows*
The tragic irony is that I just half-slept through my morning CORE Japan class and econ-realted lecture, and came to the library and wasted all that brainpower dissecting Naruto 464. PRIORITIES: I HAS THEM.

Date: 2009-09-18 09:56 pm (UTC)I did have this epic idea about a Bleach/Kuroshitsuji crossover, though...*crosses fingers with you* SO MANY PLOT BUNNIES SPAWNING FROM THIS CONCEPT.
