So I was going to write a hugelong entry about Ruby's character, dissecting his relationships with his father and his Pokemon and the people around him and how he manages to be a huge woobie and also kind of a Jerk Ass and then a woobie again, but like, DARK WOOBIE-ISM in which he kind of subverts Woobie norms, and then I was going to talk about Sapphire and how awesome she is, and how cheap it was that she was completely kicked out of the final battle just so the full depth of Ruby's honestly screwed-up character could be explored, which upset me because I think Sapphire could have been just as screwed up as he was but they didn't bother after she spent the whole arc kicking ass and *pants pants pants, ran out of breath*

And then I went and read the FireRed/LeafGreen arc and completely forgot about it in favor of squealing "SILVER, SILVER, SILVER, SILVER, SILVER, RED, MEWTWO, YELLOW, SILVER, DEOXYS, MOSTLY SILVER, GREEN, SILVER, BLUE, BLUE, BLUE, STILL MOSTLY SILVER, GIOVANNI, OH MY GOD SILVER OH MY GOD"--*shot*

And then I forgot about Ruby and Sapphire again. ^^;;

The first time was for basically NO REASON. I thought the second time was for even less reason, but then I stared at the page and saw that he ues his shirt to tie the ship's yoke into place so that it doesn't crash.

BUT STILL, IT MEANS HE SPENDS THE REST OF THE ARC WITHOUT A SHIRT!!! Now, when do we get to see Silver without a shirt, huh? Or LANCE??? (I haven't seen Lance since the GSC arc! I miss him! D8)

Honestly, Red and Green having the best bodies makes the most sense, because they're the ones who battle and train all the time--and we definitely know that Green, at least, trains his body as well as his Pokemon, and it isn't too much of a stretch to assume Red picked up on it. It's also important to remember that Red is sixteen by FR/LG, making PUBERTY also a deciding factor.

Now if, say, Ruby were to whip off his shirt and reveal SEXY PECS, then I would call bullshit. Well, I'd call bullshit through my mouthful of drool. 8Db

Oh maaaaaan, Red and Deoxys~ I love that he's got all these ~special conections~ with him and Mewtwo, all the big Psychic legendaries. XD BUT OMG, DEOXYS WAS SUCH A WOOBIE! And we finally got to see Red angst, which was delicious.

I loved when Deoxys was like, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU? YOU--YOU HUGGED THE FORRETRESS WHEN IT WAS ABOUT TO ASPLODE 8O 8O 8O and Red's like LOL NO PROBLEM~ daaawwww Deoxys~ AND THEN HE LEFT TO GO LOOK FOR DEOXYS ONE AND THEY MIGHT BE, LIKE, ~THE ONLY ONES OF THEIR KIND~ and dksflj I also loved Red being able to sense when Deoxys was around, that was woobie-fying. ♥

I love how in PokeSpe, when the characters angst, it's believable. It isn't this Hamlety, soliloquizing, beautifully articulated scholarly musing on THE TRAGEDY OF LIVING or some such thing. It's an ugly, lonely, scary emotion, felt by these kids, you know, we always forget these characters are tiny, and expressed the way normal people express ugly, lonely, scary emotions.

They isolate themselves. They lock it down until they hurt themselves or someone else with thoughtless words or actions. I mean, god, look at Ruby. He's practically a quivering ball of trust issues, thanks to his dick dad, and the sick thing is that his angst stems from his fear of becoming his father, but by internalizing that fear and self-hate, he starts behaving like Norman, which is what he was so afraid of in the first place. D: D: D: D: oh my god I love Ruby because his head is so sick~

So yeah, Red's angst was so perfect because of the way they handle that. I loved the scene where he was coming back from his ANGSTY BEACH WALK and, like, Green and Blue were interacting, and he was like, ~on the outside looking in~ and dksljfsklfjsl this manga makes me so goddamn happy~~~
