I am gravely disappoint.
Jun. 19th, 2010 03:25 pmI'm sure most of you guys have heard by now, but a whole bunch of manga distributors have teamed up to start cracking down on scanlation sites. They've already hit Mangahelpers, and Onemanga is soon to follow.
I think this is a really bad decision on their parts. Without online manga sites, a good three-quarters of my current manga collection (which has grown to easily over one hundred volumes) would never have been purchased. Manga is expensive, and that makes it hard to justify buying on faith. But being able to read series beforehand and decide that this is worth spending money on definitely has gotten me into the vast majority of the series I currently am purchasing.
I understand the concern over people just reading scanlation sites and not buying volumes at all, believe me. But what they should be doing is what Viz and other animanga distributors have already begun doing with anime - put it online yourselves. Viz now offers many anime series, both dubbed and subbed, for free streaming on their site. Why can't they do the same with a manga viewer? Think about it - going page-by-page refreshes ensures that they can make a hell of a lot of money in on-screen advertisements. And they can make this online manga available for download to a Kindle or iPad or hard drive for a lower price than buying the volume itself. And there will always be people willing to buy the print volumes. I love manga volumes. They're very visually AND tactile-ly engaging.
Don't shoot yourselves in the foot, manga distributors. Work with new media, not against them.
EDIT: shit mangafox took down all its Pokespe oh my god no I need this to survive work this summer oh my god fuck no

time management :|b
Mar. 26th, 2010 06:10 pmIt occurred to me that I should really be working on my app for Ruby at Luceti if I want to have it in by April 1. One the one hand, I'd like to play there, but on the other hand, I'm not so sure how I'll manage four games during academic crunch time. Maybe I should wait a month and app him during the May cycle, so I'll have time to do all the things I have to get done this month. But then I'd feel like a dick... On the other hand, I could app him, get him going with some CR and things, and then hiatus around finals week to rid myself of distractions. HMM. this would not be happening if I weren't so easily enabled gdit.
AND IF THAT ISN'T ENOUGH, I GOT NYM TO APP BLUE AT SQUAREWARTS but lol of course that meant I ABSOLUTELY HAD TO APP SILVER orz orz orz six characters in four games why do I do this

Life, The Universe, and Everything
Mar. 23rd, 2010 02:55 pmThe fact that I do not own a DS is now completely galling me. I have SoulSilver just sitting on my desk in its case, begging to be played. I did sneak over to a friend's dorm last night and played it on her DS, but I left the DS in her room because I felt weird borrowing it for an extended period of time.
But it was worth it for the laugh I got once I reached Mahogany Town: ( cut for hilarious spoiler )
Been doing well in classes. I get my history midterm back tomorrow, which is the last thing for a while that has me ripping my hair out. But now I have to come up with a research topic this week for Human Voice. Have I mentioned how much I hate the scientific method? I hate it a lot.
On the plus side, I get to write a paper analyzing any poem I want from the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries! I'm torn between John Donne and one of the other metaphysical poets. I kind of like Herrick and Marvell, too. SO MANY WONDERFUL OPTIONS :DD this is why I am an English major *~~*

Mar. 18th, 2010 01:09 amI was going to review the Naruto chapter, but that's going to have to happen tomorrow, as LJ is acting strange for me and not letting me get at my flist, and I don't feel like actually going to google and retrieving the link the hard way. |D
SO INSTEAD I WILL DERP ABOUT SOUL SILVER BECAUSE OMG SO MUCH HAPPINESS THAT I CANNOT CONTAIN IN MY BODYYYYYY
( cut for derpery )
I'll probably do daily game updates as we go? Or at least regular game updates. I'm grinding to face Falkner right now :|b

Sep. 10th, 2009 08:17 pmOH MY GOD YOU GUYS.

TRUE STORY
Sep. 1st, 2009 10:06 amSo I totally looked like an idiot when I powerwalked/half-ran into town from campus in under ten minutes, believing that I was going to be late for a scholarship event, and found out that the event had been canceled, according to the nice lady in the restaurant. And then as I slowly, miserably, and dejectedly began to make my way back to campus, I called my (awesome) roommate to tell her that I would be late getting back, forgetting that she and I were in the same scholarship organization and that she of all people would know about events, and she told me it had been moved to a building on-campus.
:|
So I again powerwalked/half-ran back to campus, to burst in the door at exactly the meeting time (thank god that they changed the time when they moved the event). I then proceeded to guilt trip the guy who told me about the event and gave me the wrong place/time in the first place, we laughed at me, and I ate Ben & Jerry's ice cream to make myself feel better. It all ended up working out okay.
Also true story within this true story: Yesterday was August 31st, and on my way back to campus, it was so cold I could see my breath. Oh, upstate New York...
So how are you all doing? My laptop is still being very stupid, and so I am definitely taking it to Tech Support after my 1:20 class (no excuses!) and seeing about the wireless, as well as inquiring about getting an Ethernet cord to jack straight into the phone line. That would probably be better for me in terms of getting Interwebz in my room, at least, especially since I have received information that our student wireless is slow anyway. Sigh.
I'm starting to get a good sense of my schedule. It is packed. I may have to start cutting back on Internet time, and that may mean dropping an RP. D:
In other news, I am learning to like coffee. And vegan food. :D Beans are freaking delicious and healthy. I'm not saying I'm going to go vegetarian, but I do plan to start incorporating much more plant food into my diet. We have great organic options in the dining hall.
I tried out for the university chorus! The music director loved me--secretly, I wondered how good the choral program could be, because my sight reading was a little wonky and my voice was totally dehydrated, and we were still discussing my chances of getting into the chamber choir (elite). Then I wondered if that was just my bad self-esteem, since we have a large and active choral program here and a lot of great independent a capella groups as well, and maybe I am just that good. I've never considered myself to be "just that good" because I've always been behind the amazing and fantastic people from my high school who are going to be music majors and do all sorts of amazing things. IDK. [/self-deprecating prattle]
People are great here. I really love it. C:

Thinkythoughts and several tangents
May. 10th, 2009 01:44 pmSo I'm supposed to be writing several Creative Writing stories that I am way behind on, in addition to doing that term paper that is due A WEEK FROM TOMORROW, but I was instead thinking about frivolous things. So I felt like sharing.
( Ill-organized thinkythoughts on the Sannin and Sasuke )
I love it when people's words are thrown right back in their faces in that way. Love it. It's a trope that I adore.
( Tangent on tropes, Disney movies, and pseudo-father/son relationships )
And....wow. Okay. Nothing...much more to talk about here. I'm...going to go do some work or something. *sidles out*
Okay.
Okayokayokay.
Here.
( I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE TO HAVE STUFF THIS AWESOME HAPPEN TO ME )
I AM EITHER AN IDIOT OR A GENIUS
Oct. 1st, 2008 08:24 pmYou guys. I figured it out.
If you're not stressed, you don't stress.
Wait, I know redundant sentece is redundant, but--this. I have not been in regular classes for two days now due to field trips and I just sat down and did two big-A assignmenty type things that I have been sitting around angsting about for a solid week now. Solely because I came home from the Renaissance Faire all mellow and chill and happy because I was hanging with my friends and not sitting in a fluourescent-lit classroom in those killer-ass chairdesks that hurt my rear end and make my legs cramp.
So...If... I stop thinking about doing things...and do them...they get done.
I don't know if this proves I'm stupid or smart.
